Whether you are interested in volunteering your time once a week or once a year, whether you are a student or retiree — or somewhere in between — we have an opportunity that will match your availability and interests.
The process is easy and the rewards are countless. Simply fill out our application (for under 18 applicants, please use this application). All events are held at Iona: 4125 Albemarle Street NW, unless otherwise noted.
To figure out where and how you’d like to get involved, please review the list of options below.
Active Wellness Program at St. Alban’s
Time: Weekdays, anytime between 9:30 AM – 2 PM
Volunteers provide welcome support through greeting participants, taking reservations, setting up classes and meals, assisting in the kitchen, serving lunch, and helping with workshops, seminars, and field trips. (Program located at 3001 Wisconsin Avenue NW, next to the National Cathedral).
Weekend Meal Packing and Delivery Time: Saturdays, 9:15 AM – 11:30 AM
Time: Packing takes place from 9:15 to 10:45 AM, delivery is from 10 to 11:30 AM. Those who commit on a regular basis may be assigned to the same route each time and have more of an opportunity to develop a personal connection with the people they deliver meals to. (Packing takes place at Iona, 4125 Albemarle Street, NW. Delivery is to older adults in neighborhoods from Foggy Bottom to Chevy Chase DC.)
Individuals as well as groups of all sizes and ages deliver meals to homebound older adults in Northwest Washington, DC, who are unable to prepare their own meals. Volunteers without a vehicle are invited to pack the meals.
Wellness & Arts Center Volunteers
Time: Weekdays, anytime between 9 AM – 5 PM
Assist in creating a friendly atmosphere for older adults by sharing your talents, socializing with participants, helping with lunch, and supporting Iona staff with recreational activities. Participants are required to attend an orientation.
Friendly Visitors Program
Time: Weekdays, and/or weekends
Adult volunteers are trained and then matched with an Iona client (Iona social workers provide supervision). During regular visits, volunteers provide companionship, help with reading, and go grocery shopping. Requires a one-year commitment but the schedule is flexible. (Our volunteers are paired with clients throughout Northwest Washington.)
The most rewarding part of volunteering? The people I meet. Their stories provide a window not only into their lives, but into the history of this great city.”
– Former Councilmember and Iona volunteer Jim Nathanson
Arts and Cultural Event Volunteers
Time: Weekdays, during the day and sometimes evenings, and occasional weekends
Be part of Iona’s team that organizes and manages gallery openings, artist talks, author readings, and music and theatrical performances. Volunteers help with behind-the-scenes activities as well as greeting guests, handing out materials, and helping with set up and cleanup of refreshments. An added benefit: you get to attend wonderful arts programs.
Time: Weekdays, anytime between 9 AM – 5 PM.
Do you enjoy being in an office setting? We always need help with filing, data entry, and other computer projects.
Other volunteer opportunities may come up throughout the year. For instance: We may need drivers to transport residents to Iona’s low-vision support group, which meets Thursday mornings. Volunteers need their own car to pick up participants at around 9 AM and then take them home from Iona at 11:30 AM.
One Friday a month, as part of the SHARE Food Network, we may need drivers to pick up and deliver groceries to low-income older adults. Pick up is between 3 and 5 PM at Blessed Sacrament, 3630 Quesada St. NW. Delivery is to Iona clients in upper Northwest Washington.
We also always appreciate volunteers on Thanksgiving and Christmas mornings when we pack and deliver meals to homebound older adults. Packing is at St. Mary’s Court, 725 24th St. NW from 8:30 to 11:30 AM. Pick up and delivery is from the same location, from 9:45 AM to Noon to clients in Northwest Washington.
