June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. This month provides an opportunity to discuss the brain and Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias — a major public health issue. The 2023 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report from the Alzheimer’s Association® states that more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s and over 11 million are providing unpaid care for people living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias. Today, an estimated 14,000 individuals in D.C. are living with a form of dementia — 1 in 10 over the age of 65 and nearly half over 85 – with that number expected to triple over the next 30 years. With those numbers on the rise, Iona offers programs to support individuals and families navigating this diagnosis.
