Inspirational Leadership at the 27th Annual Super Senior Day

On Thursday, May 20 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Iona and the Citizen’s Advisory Council hosted the 27th annual Super Senior Day at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library at 9th and G Streets, NW.

For 26 years, non-profit, community-based, governmental and religious organizations have recognized and honored senior volunteers at this event. Since the first Super Senior Day in 1984, more than 800 volunteers over the age of 60 have been cited for their exemplary contributions to their communities throughout the city. In the presence of family members, friends and distinguished guests from the D.C. government, 31 honorees from 29 non-profit and community-based organizations were recognized and awarded a certificate.

In addition to the moving ceremony, this year's event featured special guest speaker Lester Strong, Chief Executive Officer of Experience Corps, an organization which works to create powerful opportunities for older adults to meet society's greatest challenges.  The celebration concluded with an impromtu celebration of the Exectutive Director of the DC Office on Aging, Dr. Clarence Brown's birthday complete a cake and lemonade.

Super Senior Day is usually held in May of each year.  Organizations wishing to nominate a special volunteer should contact the Super Senior Day Coordinator at   This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .   Click here for the nomination form.
