Senior Advisory Coalition

In April of 2009, twelve agency leaders and advocates convened to begin to discuss a new type of advocacy coalition focused on the many continuing unmet needs of seniors we are serving today throughout the District of Columbia and to begin to think about the implications for an explosion in the population of baby boomers and a growing demographic of seniors who are 85+ plus.

In the months since its inception, the Senior Advisory Coalition has grown to include participants from over 35 organizations to work towards our mission: To be one voice—collaborative, unifying, and innovative—advocating to improve the quality of life for and with DC’s seniors.

In the summer of 2009, Coalition members were successful in advocating that the DC Office on Aging request a time extension for filing their State Plan on Aging for 2011-2013.

In the coming year, the Coalition will be focusing its efforts in two main areas:

  • Input in the DC Office on Aging State Plan on Aging for the years 2011-2013.
  • Building interest and input into a process for developing a long term plan for aging services in the District of Columbia.

Upcoming meeting schedule:
February 16, 2011, Seabury Ward 5 Aging Services, 2900 Newton St. NE, Washington, DC 20018, at     intersection of Newton St. and Rhode Island Ave. NE, 202-529-8701.
